When talking with children about the death of a person or pet we recommend the following:
Find a quiet place to talk.
Have the news delivered by a trusted adult.
Be honest with the child.
Use the words died or dead.
Some children will have questions, some will not. Be prepared for either.
Be prepared that there may be many emotions expressed or none at all.
Offer comfort and support.
Remember that it is okay to not have all the answers.
Prepare the child for what will come in the next few days.
